Breeder Visit Educates Pet Industry Partners: Seeing Is Believing

Petland’s success depends on strong partnerships across the pet industry - from regulators and veterinarians to distributors and advocacy groups. As pressures from legislation, activists, and regulatory changes grow, educating these partners about responsible breeding practices has become more important than ever.

Petland expanded its efforts by not only inviting partners to its annual Petland Trade Show but also hosting a full-day breeder tour in northern Ohio. About 50 participants, including advocacy leaders, AKC representatives, veterinarians, lawmakers, political staff, and multiple puppy distributors - joined the visit to see firsthand what ethical, well-run breeding operations look like. The day continued with an informational seminar featuring breeder organizations, the USDA, the Ohio Department of Agriculture, and Petland’s Animal Welfare team.

“We need more people of influence to see the great job breeders are doing,” said Brian Winslow, Petland Executive Director. Historically, distributors hesitated to come together due to competitive pressures, but this year’s group embraced collaboration and shared best practices.

One of the most striking reactions came from Sandy Moore, the newly appointed CEO of the Pet Advocacy Network. Having toured a breeding facility only once before in the early 2000s, she described the Ohio operations as “light years ahead… beautiful, completely defendable,” and said the experience made her proud to work in the pet industry.

Lawmakers echoed that sentiment. Ohio State Representative Mark Johnson was so impressed that he hopes to organize a similar tour for more legislators, reinforcing the importance of transparency and education in shaping informed policy.

During the seminar, speakers highlighted strict breeding regulations, health testing, and oversight. Petland’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Rebecca Atwood, shared her own transformation—how touring breeders revealed that her previous perceptions were outdated and that Petland is genuinely committed to raising standards.

The day ended with shared enthusiasm from partners, regulators, and inspectors alike. As Winslow summarized, “The conversations were invaluable - well worth every moment.”
